"Uncorrected" by John Sheirer

Scantic Books is proud to present Uncorrected, a new work of fiction by award-winning author John Sheirer.

What would you do if you helped someone escape from prison and then realized he actually belonged there? Gary Sanderson is a thirty-something, idealistic college professor who takes on the project of teaching at a prison in southern Vermont. During his first prison course, Gary befriends an innocent-seeming inmate named Sam Curtis. Won over by Sam's charisma and background, Gary decides to help Sam escape. But Sam turns out to be not at all who Gary thought he was and soon begins to terrorize Gary. Gary is torn between going to the police (and incriminating himself in the escape) and trying to take on the psychopathic Sam by himself. Ultimately, Sam is too much for Gary to handle, so he seeks the help of Sandy Fren, the tough but empathetic police detective. She and Gary work to outsmart and capture Sam before he can achieve his final, twisted objective: killing Gary. Drawing on his own experience teaching college courses in prison, John Sheirer creates a gripping tale of manipulation, determination, and redemption.

Uncorrected is a thrilling and thoughtful exploration of a character’s personal crisis while he’s struggling to do the right thing. This one kept me on the edge of my seat while making me think and feel on many different levels about the concepts of good and evil.” – Bill Pullman, Screen Actors Guild Outstanding Actor Nominee

"Shadow Cast" by Jessica Barone

Shadow Cast by Jessica Barone was just re-released from Scantic Books! This novel was originally published in two separate volumes as The Requiem (2002) and The Legendary (2004). It has now been updated and re-imagined for the 21st Century.

All Jason ever wanted was a family. Somewhere to belong. Born in 1677 in Bordeaux, France, his father is cousin to Louis the Sun King. His father, in a fit of jealousy, burns down the family’s chateau, taking his own life and that of Jason’s mother and brother. This act sets Jason on a path to Paris where he attracts the attention of an ancient Russian strigoi (immortal bold-drinkers). Although he stays by Alexander’s side for some time, Jason ultimately rejects him and boards a ship bound for America, determined to once again start a family of his own. Featuring complex family dynamics worthy of a day-time drama, The Shadowlands series follows the journey of three young people into the world of the strigoi.

“Bob Thurber is lightning in a bottle. His writing reaches in and grabs your heart and squeezes it tight. Bob’s work is visual and emotional and beautiful in its poignancy. He’s a master of sparse, surgical prose. Wise well beyond his years, one wonders at his human insight. I would read his grocery lists.” - Vincent Carrella, author of The Serpent Box

About the author: Bob Thurber is an old “unschooled” writer with no degrees in anything. Born in 1955 and raised in abject poverty, Bob graduated high school by the skin of his teeth, then spent his early adult years working menial jobs while reading obsessively and studying the craft of fiction. He served a lengthy apprenticeship, writing nearly every day for twenty years before submitting his work for publication. Since then his stories have received a long list of awards and citations, among them The Marjory Bartlett Sanger Award and The Barry Hannah Fiction Prize. Selections have appeared in over sixty anthologies and hundreds of publications, including Esquire. Bob is the author of Paperboy: A Dysfunctional Novel and three other collections of stories. He resides in Massachusetts where, despite vision loss, he continues to write every day. Visit him at BobThurber.net.

Eliot in his songs of the jellicles and other felines. Especially engaging in this volume are the poems in the voices of a colorful variety of self-satisfied whiskered beings.
